Climate change

The climate in the Netherlands is changing and will continue to progress in the coming decades. We are expecting warmer winters and springs with higher chances of extreme weather (heavier rain- and windstorms). These conditions will have huge effects on the life history of our birds.

Potential problems could occur if the timing of breeding changes in relation to the peak in food availability.

Sovon collaborates with other research institutes to contribute to the climate change research by collecting and analyzing data on the number, distribution, reproduction, and phenology of various bird species.

Phenology

It is now abundantly clear that many bird species are arriving earlier from their wintering areas as well as hastening their breeding behaviour.

Populations

Spatial changes are also expected to occur, where bird species form southern regions will shift northward and northern species will vanish

Food webs

Potential problems could occur if the timing of breeding changes in relation to the peak in food availability.
