nederlands In close cooperation with the German “Institute of Avian Research” SOVON participates in a large international research program financed by the “European Space Agency” (ESA) . Partners in this program are "Computational Biogeography and Physical Geography (UvA)" and "Centre for Limnology (NIOO-KNAW)".
Our project focuses on following the movements of Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls and Barnacle Geese using satellite transmitters. The overall aim of the FlySafe program is to prove the added value of the integration of space-based systems (meteorology, earth observations, telecommunication etc.) and earth-based systems to improve flight safety. More information on the overall research program can be found at: Avian Alert website.
In the third issue of SOVON-nieuws jaargang 2007, we report on the first results of the project. On this site the tracks of individual Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls and Barnacle Geese are made available. In due time extra species will be added. Those who have installed Google Earth on their computer can download for each gull the kml file with the complete track and study this track in Google Earth. Those without Google Earth installed on their computer can view the tracks of individual gulls via this site.
